Good news for one of our ongoing collaborations: our lab’s part of the Midwest Birth Outcomes and Indigenous American Pregnancy (MBO) study has been approved for a no-cost extension through December 31, 2027. That means we can keep enrolling participants in Fargo and continue this work with Dr. Anna Strahm’s lab at Sanford Research.
About the study

Indigenous American women in the Midwest experience infant mortality (8.8 per 1,000 live births) and preterm birth (12.8%) at rates well above the Healthy People 2030 targets of 5.0 per 1,000 and 9.6%. Standard risk factors do not fully explain these gaps. Led by the Strahm Lab at Sanford Research in partnership with our Mind, Body & Baby Lab, the MBO study looks at culturally relevant factors, including historical trauma, childhood and recent stress, and wellness behaviors, and at how the body responds to stress during pregnancy.
Participants complete surveys and one laboratory visit in mid pregnancy, either at Sanford Research in Sioux Falls or with our lab at NDSU in Fargo. The study is registered at ClinicalTrials.gov as NCT06008561.
