Congratulations to Garrett Byron, who completed his Ph.D. in Health/Social Psychology in May 2026! His dissertation examined unique stress experiences and health among transgender and gender non-conforming people in North Dakota.

Garrett’s work in the lab spanned stress physiology in pregnancy, heart rate variability, and our virtual reality stress paradigm. Along the way he earned a Society of Behavioral Medicine meritorious abstract award, a first-place poster award at the CBBRe Neurobehavioral Research Symposium, the NDSU Graduate Student Excellence in Instruction Award, and the Society for Biopsychosocial Science and Medicine LGBT Health Scholar Trainee Award.
Dr. Byron is continuing his training as a postdoctoral fellow in the Health Disparities Research Scholars program, an NIH-funded T32 training program in the Department of Population Health Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. We are very proud of you, Garrett!

Congratulations as well to all of this year’s NDSU Psychology Ph.D. graduates and their mentors!
We were also thrilled to finally get a commencement photo with Dr. Anna Strahm, who completed her Ph.D. in 2020, when the pandemic meant there was no ceremony to celebrate it.
